I had this one at my last house, and it's now as tall as I am. It's so beautiful and so low-maintenance that I have one in my pot ghetto waiting for planting.

It's odd, in a similar climate half a zone north in Asheville, Mutabilis is no good at all. It is just crushed by stem canker every winter and doesn't develop any size. When I told that to Pat Henry of Roses Unlimited (in northern SC), she was visibly taken aback. Later I guessed it was because she was raising about 50 of them for the Biltmore House here. The planting looked like a wretched failure when I saw it several years ago.

I was real disappointed with it the first couple of years. It didn't seem to grow or do much of anything. But then, it really took off last year. So this is one to be patient with, but it is really worth it. Mine was very tiny when I ordered it from the old garden rose place that used to be in Macon, GA (but isn't there anymore). I can't remember their name, but they were a great place to order from at the time.

Michael, Funny you should mention Biltmore. I went there in Memorial Day in 2007 after that disastrous Easter Freeze. Here is a pic of the Mutabalis bed:

It was all dead, black with canker. Of course the rose damage paled in comparison to the Japanese Maple damage.
