How I wish I had had that phrase at my fingertips when I was at a Williamsburg garden symposium and the very knowledgeable speaker advised (when questioned) that if we wanted delphiniums that we should double dig beds 36 inches deep.

Because it's getting really hot in the afternoon and any books that give us gardens and a sense of history are worth reading and rereading.

Interesting. I'm currently reading a biography of George Washington by Willard Sterne Randall. It's an entertaining book, and among other things it talks about Washington as a farmer. He was evidently innovative, desirous in part to escape the economic trap of tobacco farming and grow crops that had a partly local market. Jefferson's interest in gardening is well known, but I hadn't hear about the other founding fathers.
