It is usually recommended to new members to read up on basic questions on this Forum as you will quickly acquire in-depth information.
There is a wealth of information on this forum on those topics. If you go to the very top of the page and click on Search, then enter your topic, it will bring up a list of Discussion Threads where your topics have been discussed in detail. Such as pot size, when to repot and into what size pot, what type of pot, when to remove the mother leaf, can you reuse the mother leaf, how long to wait until blooms, etc. The more you read, the more you will acquire a comfort level. There are various approaches, however, there are also general guidelines in achieving success with violets.

It sounds as though your instincts are good; the pot is HUGE for this size plant. As Joanne, says, read up and when you feel a bit more knowledgeable, you will be more comfortable transplanting down to a much smaller pot.
