50-year-old crabapple?!

I have always admired the neatly pruned trees and shrubs in a (Japanese?) neighbour's garden up the street. They were out pruning them this morning so we stopped for a chat. I was surprised when the answer to my question 'what is that one?' turned out to be 'a 50-year-old crabapple'! Talk about dedicated pruning....!

Is that a Halls crab-apple? In the classical Japanese settings, there is no chair. So, they look at the plant at a lower angle, I guess. It is really torturous for people who are not used to sitting on their own legs for hours.
