Whatever you choose though, remember that the rhodies have shallow roots near the top few inches of the soil. This is an area where the other shrubs's roots could "invade" in their search for water and compete against the rhodies. You also want to maintain good air circulation around the rhodies; another large bush planted near the rhodies might create fungal problems later in life. Luis

Japanese maples, camellias, azaleas, hostas and ferns are all naturals. Blueleaf hostas might give you what you want in terms of color harmony, if leaves sufficiently advanced at flowering time.
