row spacing for onions

I am planting California Reds from Bonnie Plants. Plants not sets.. I bought them at Lowes and got short changed by about 20%. Am e mail to Bonnie has resulted in 2 more bunches of onion plants arriving on my door step free. ( way to go Bonnie. U just went way up my list) But now I have way too many plants.

My original two groups ( 100 plants) were placed in 5 rows. 12" apart and 4 to 5" spacing in rows. Can I squeeze another row inbetween those? This would put the rows 6" apart. It would make weeding a special task. This is tough

I have a 9 foot square dedicated to red onions. 4 rows of bulb sets ( yea yea I know better) and 5 rows of plants. Maybe I should place the new plants next to, or tween, the 4 rows of bulb sets that are likely to just go to seed anyway?

Any experience please share.
