Full StoryThis fall, in a sea of Sugar Maples, fine trees they are, I noticed one that was just a little different. Upon closer inspection, it was a Black Maple, and had the classic three-lobe, droopy leaves which was my first clue.
Acer nigrum isn't native here, but is back in Ohio, where I grew up, even then, you didn't see many.
I like the black maples better, myself. They have a few subtly different qualities that resemble what I like about sugar maples, but something is different, and the fall color is more of a deep yellow-orange, than the orange to orange-red of most Sugars.
Anyone here agree?
Secondly, I have tried hard to find a source to buy black maple trees. Forestfarm carries them, but their shipping costs are a bit crazy.
