Myth. My drip system is connected right to the water line, and I certainly don't let it sit overnight.

Like lazygardens, my gardens are watered directly from the faucet and I've had not problems, although my gardens are 'young' (only 3 years). However, I recently attended a class about gardening in the desert put on by the Valley Permaculture Guild and the speaker recommends adding a filter to your outside faucets to remove chlorine. I wonder too if the filter will remove some of the salinity from the water. Dunno. I send this along as devil's advocate and simply for your consideration. I'm interested to hear the opinions of others on this forum.

Chlorine is fairly short lived once the water is out of the pipe and exposed to air. Not a huge amount to worry about there. No simple prefilter will have any effect on salinity levels in tap water. Only 3 ways to do that. #1 reverse osmosis filtration (expensive up front and makes a lot of waste water) #2 deionization resins (very expensive, trades one ion for another I.e. sodium for calcium) #3 distilization (really expensive up front, large ongoing electrical demand)

I personally think the salinity issue is slightly overblown *if* you know enough how to prevent build up. My company produces purified water by reverse osmosis here at the ranch. We use the waste water from our big commercial RO unit to water a huge garden. That waste water is a concentrate rejection solution that is about 50% more salty than standard tap water. This would normally be death to a garden if nothing else was done. But we are on flood irrigation so once every two weeks the whole garden is flooded and it washes the salt back out of the soil. If I can put that level of salt on the ground and flush it out all the average tap water user has it easy. Just flood any growing area periodicaly and flush it away.
