Stag Horn fern care

A year ago I purchased a small stag horn fern with fronds about 10" long. I mounted it to a piece of cork and secured the base with moss. I soaked the plant and cork once a week and occasionally misted the fronds when necessary. I've hung the plant in different rooms or outdoors (depending on the time of year - I live in Boston) so it would get adequate light and humidity. It has survived over the year showing little to no growth.

Over the last month the tips of the fronds have become brown and brittle and the fronds have began to shrivel. Is it possible to save this fern? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

The fronds turning brown is normal. There just dying. Winter time could be a slow growing time.The ferns fine.

I have heard that Stag horns love banana peels. Do I puree them and pour into the middle ball? Just purchased one that is 10 years old and beautiful and want to make sure its around for a long long time. Thanks

That's so funny Colleen, I heard that too!!! Here's a link from GardenWeb regarding the care of staghorns... and a couple quotes off the web.

"Feed your stag with organic food such as fish emulsion fertilizer. Another good trick is to place a banana peel (peel only) behind the stag...between the stag and the board. They like the potassium."

"Staghorns also love bananas. I cut a whole banana in sections and place around the base. They are the only fertilizer I use on both of mine."
