Pinus mugo 'Paul's Dwarf' is a nice unique cultivar that stays green year-round. Very short needles with light-colored candles in early spring.

I hadn't realized you could get Mugos in such small sizes. The Paul's Dwarf and Jakobsen are quite a bit smaller than I was thinking. I do really like the Jakobsen though and will be keeping it in mind for a project in my front yard where I only have a space about 20x40 to work with.

So getting back to the space am currently thinking about...
If I want something that is going to be closer to 6 feet in 10 years rather than 2 or 3 I think I need the pumilio or mughus? Other names to look for would be nice too. I'm hoping to buy locally rather than by mail.

You might consider 'Big Tuna'. Odd name, but is a uniquely beautiful mugo. Grows in more of an upright oval shape. Might also be the growth rate you are looking for.

Buying locally can limit your options somewhat, although many local nurseries will special order conifer cultivars. For example, I've ordered from Iseli through Timberline Gardens, a local nursery.
