Buying my first Conifer, Abies Concolor: Plant in Spring or Fall?

Hi everyone. I'm really excited about this. If I can have just one tree that I don't have to deal with Japanese Beetles then I will be one happy woman...

I love the White Fir....

I live in conifer land, EVERYONE around me has conifers. I live next door to a Christmas tree farmer and his trees butt up against my property, right to the line in fact. He plants some of the trees in the fall and some in the spring. He doesn't water any of them or really pays any attention to them, except for trimming them in the summer, and yet they grow just fine being ignored.

When is the most opportune time to plant a White Fir? Would they benefit from mulch too just like the rest of my trees?

Thanks in advance for your help.
