If they get enough sun and not too much water they do GREAT! And you can still take it up in the fall and take it in the house or greenhouse over the winter. They don't develop huge root systems so they're easy to dig and transplant. I think mine prefer the ground to a pot, maybe it's the nature of the soil, but they always look so happy in the ground. The reason I'm asking is I saw a picture someone's garden and they had a Geranium in the ground and that thing really spread out. It was gorgeous! Mine will get a lot of sun.

When I lived in Nebraska, we'd plant ours in the ground in springtime and dig them up in the fall and keep them in the house, and repeat each year. They'd look awful in the spring when we'd first plant them...they would lose their leaves and look bad for a month or so, but then, they'd put out new growth and look amazing all the rest of the spring/summer. They'd get around 3 feet wide and almost as tall...the most amazing geraniums you've ever seen! We found out it's a good idea to cut it back after planting in them outside in the springtime. Then you can stick the cuttings in the ground and the'll root almost 100% of the time...giving you more and more each year.

Almost all of mine are in the ground and do very well there.Then again i'm in S.Calif.
