Compact Plants for a Small Garden Space

I have only been gardening for about a year but I am addicted. I have been making newbie mistakes and hope to avoid a few by getting some suggestions. I have a small space to garden but want to include quite a bit of variety. Last year I selected a few plants which are now taking over the garden (Guara and Sweet Dreams Coreopsis). I also have: Limerock Ruby (it actually came back for me after planting it last fall), Scabiosa, Dianthus, Dahlias, Shasta Daisies, Hardy Hibiscus, Delphinum, Geum, and Blanketflower.

Some space remains in the garden believe it or not which I am looking to fill with compact plants (both height and spread and preferably perennial) with lots of color for the front of the border. I keep on purchasing plants that get too tall or spread out too much. One part of the garden is full-sun southern exposure (9-10 hours of sun.) The other part of the garden is part shade (morning shade 5-6 hours afternoon sun).

Your suggestions are greatly appreciated.
