Four years of Pinus parviflora 'Mini Curls'

A very cool, unusual Japanese white pine, this little natural bonsai grows with crinkled leaves and short, wirey stems into a plant with a lot of character with minimal pruning. My original plant is from Bob Fincham, Coenosium Gardens.

There is another plant name, 'Jim's Mini Curls' floating about and I'll need to hear from Bob or someone else in the know if this is the same plant, and if so, which name is correct.

2011, Spring - With the understock left on.

2012 - This is essentially *two* growing season since the first photo, the Summers of 2011 and 2012.

Will, you can also talk to Sam at Conifer Kingdom. He pointed out a group of different varieties of 'Curls' to me a couple of days ago when I visited there.

Lovely plant and well grown!

One recurring theme in your plants is accelerated growth after several years, no doubt due to the fine environment provided by you and your climate. In this case, the extended shoot growth on the right hand side of the picture is noteworthy. When I noticed this I got to wondering about your philosophy for dealing with such - will you prune it off to maintain the plant's small stature, or would you prefer to leave it on to allow your plant to develop naturally and observe what happens? Or will you leave it on only until grafting season...

I'm enjoying the opportunity to see a few more of your plants again, thanks for posting.
