Just dry them out in a warm room, they'll open and the seeds fall out easily. Then treat the seeds as you have done before.

You can then keep the cones to start a cone herbarium, or use them for christmas ornaments, etc.

Thanks Resin. I was planning something more complicated than necessary.

When I ordered seeds I either planted or germinated them immediately. If I want to germinate the seeds in March so they are on a normal cycle do I need to keep them cool over the winter or just keep them dry?

Keep the seeds dry in your fridge. A three to four week period of moist stratification will increase germination. Plan ahead.
