Confused about hollyhocks

Tracy Brant

I bought a little Chater's Double hollyhock plant this summer, and put it in a pot. It only got about 2' high, because the main stalk had been damaged, but it produced a lot of nice white blooms, despite a bit of a rust problem.

Now I have a lot of seeds, but I am not sure when to plant them. I've read various instructions for "treating" the plant as a perennial, biennial, and annual. I'm confused about how one cultivar can have different growing habits.

Will this year's plant die permanently now, or will it come back next year?

What do I do to assure a steady supply of hollyhocks every summer? Is it too late to plant seeds this year?
