Do you think you have an ants nest in the soil, or, are there any aphids on your plant? Ants will milk the aphids for their honey-dew and in return the ants protect the aphids from predators.

I think we have aphids. I don't know what they look like, but I've read a little and think that is what they are.

Is this a problem? Should I do something to get rid of both the aphids and ants?

My guess is you've got aphids, the ones I get are usually green, they come in assorted colors though :o(, you can wash them off with a strong stream of water or better yet spray your plant with a Safer's soap solution if you want to stay organic. If not, there are other insecticides on the market that will do the job. once the aphids are gone the ants should disappear.

It may be worthwhile using the same 'dunking' method that I described in an earlier post under "spidermite susceptibility...."

This should cure both the aphid and the ant problem for you. You should definately wear some rubber gloves though when you do this.
