Hummingbird Garden

Black-chinned Hummer at Penstemon

My wife got some great pictures of a juvenile Black-chinned Hummingbird nectaring from my Penstemon barbatus plants. Click on link below for pic. You can also see another pic here (cut and paste into browser):

You can tell this is a juvenile by the fine spotting on the throat. You can also see from the pick why they call these (and other Penstemons) beard tongues by the hairs projecting from the lip of the flower.

Beautiful picture! My lone female just loves the P. barbatus "Iron Maiden" that I purchased last year. It just lost it's last blooms :(

Thanks! I tried getting some pictures of the Rufous that was visiting, but didn't succeed. My wife grabs the camera and snaps some pictures real quick of this juvenile BCHU and they turn out great! Guess I better let her try to catch pics of the hummers.

The P. barbatus is the wings down favorite of the hummers that visit my garden.
