What Happened To My Hydrangeas??!!

Hi everyone! I'm not normally in this forum, I hang out elsewhere here... but I have a question for you Hydrangea experts! I have four gorgeous Hydrangea which have always rewarded me with a prolific show of blooms in late summer for the past four years. This year... nothing. And I mean, nothing. No blooms at ALL. on any of the plants! They all grow together in the same garden, which is mostly shade with late afternoon sun. They get lots of water and the plants look beautiful and healthy. So what would cause them suddenly to not bloom? Thanks for any insight... I appreciate it!

Without seeing the plants, I would assume yours are bigleaf hydrangeas and they failed to bloom due to winter cold damage.

Most bigleaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla) bloom on growth that was produced the previous season. Nascent flower buds develop on this growth in late summer and early fall. This flowering growth can be easily damaged by winter cold or late spring freezes. And given the severity of last winter across much of the country, it is highly likely this was the cause. Frozen stems and buds = no flowers.

In zone 5 (actually zone 6 or below), I would strongly encourage you to offer bigleaf hydrangeas winter protection to maximize flowering potential for the coming season.

Or plant some hydrangeas that bloom on new wood.
