Newbie question, is this a lily?

Sorry that I can't give any additional information. I'm a real newbie to gardening and know absolutely nothing about various flowers.

My daughter was in Pre-K last year and one day she came back

with a plant that they all planted. The teacher couldn't tell us what it was, but she thought it was a lily, but didn't really know. It hasn't blossomed yet, but here's a couple pictures of the plant and a closeup of the leaves and stem. Can anyone identify this plant?

Not a true lily, all of which have simple undivided leaves and unbranched stems. A dicot of some sort, but you'd probably have to wait for a flower to be sure which.

It may be a cosmos, but I'm not 100% certain without seeing a flower.
