Name of tree with edible white berries, anyone?

Hi and thanks for reading my post. So, here's the story: when I was a child, my mom introduced me to white berries (some, when ripe, have an almost purple color undertone, but they generally look white, almost translucent) which grew on trees in Odessa, Russia. She called them "shelkovitsa" which literally translates to "silk berries". I have just recently come across the same tree in my backyard in Providence, RI and was wondering what these berries are called as my boyfriend is a bit skeptical to even try one before he learns the name of berries, even though i told him they are edible. The berries look like white blackberries with a silky texture and a mild taste. They are not godwood as I already looked that one up. If anyone can answer my question, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

k
