this is an Epidendrum radicans and was doing great until this morning... suddenly, it looked like this:
And the leaves have a strange texture and limp ness to them. And when I watered it, the water that ran out the bottom was green. (I watered with clear water)....
Did this happen overnight? Is this the only plant that is showing this? what about the surrounding plants?
Ruling out any chemical exposure, the only thing I could think of would be cell damage due to frost. That is unlikely though in your area and to be isolated to just one plant.
There is no way that antifreeze got on this orchid, but yes, green, like anti freeze.... It has been in that pot for months and in the exact same pleace without any issues, then overnight - I get this... It's the only one with this issue and I have 4 plants right next to it with no issues... Regarding the frost... it's been in the 80's down here in south florida, so I don't think that's what happened... I am totally stumped... I also didn't realize that I posted this on the gallery forum...Should I try over in the regular form to see if anyone else has seen this? Thanks! K
Looks like botrytis too me. You need to get it out of the pot and see what's happening at the root. If the roots are brown and slimy bin it. Epi. radicans usually has aerial roots, however. You can often get a few cuttings. You will need to give them a pretty radical fungicide treatment, however, and keep them away from other plants. I'd stick them in the backyard and don't give them too much water.
^"Damage from acetic acid fumes often shows up as bleaching, silvering or collapsing of foliage within a few hours on a warm, sunny day." -- I'm sure that could happen on a warm night, too.
That's amazing, btw. It doesn't look like thrips or spider mite damage, to me.
OK, I tried to look it up, but I'm chemistry-impaired - this is the chemical that is vinegar? How would it get there? And why?
Wild and crazy thought - do they aerial spray for mosquitos where you live? Presumably that wouldn't be strong enough to nuke a plant, though, and why just the one plant? Although I doubt they spray at night... Guess it was a dumb suggestion...
