What we try to do is position the recessed lights directly over the countertop where the light just washes down the front of any wall cabinets but is not blocked by the wall cabinets. This puts the light in front of you the user to the best extent possible and you don't cast shadows on the work surface. We really love our undercabinet lights as well, they really make a difference, particularly as we all age.
