Are you talking about 3 gal potted plant or quart size potted plant? If it is a 3 galon, then your plant will most likely be bigger than the bareroot. You can buy it now, dig a hole big enough for the pot, and place the plant and pot in the hole. By fall, you can remove the plant from pot and plant it wherever you want. In fact if you are so inclined, you can divide it into halves or threes and you will get 2 - 3 nice size divisions from the plant without hurting the plant at all.

You can plant it now, just make sure that you do not disturb the roots. The reason that I suggest planting in the fall is that it gives you the opportunity to check, prune, and open up the roots of your plant. Being potbound, the roots may encircle one another and increase the possibility of choking. Your plant may suffer as a result.

I have peonies in my current house. we are selling our house. I want to take my peonies with me. if i dig them during summer are they going to survive? I have waited long time to have them grow and blooms. Now I am worried that I am going to kill them. Please suggest me what should i do, if i have to dig them during summer.

If you have to dig them in the summer to save them, then go ahead. Pot them right up with as much of the root as you were able to save, and keep them in the shade. You can reduce the amount of foliage, but I would not cut it all the way down now. Al

Transport them in big pots. I have done this before. I dug my out when we were moving in May. I kept them in there till September then move them to the ground.
