What kind of paint should we use for new kitchen island.

My husband is building our island that will be painted to contrast with our new Amish built cherry wood perimeter cabinets. We plan to paint the island, and may also glaze it. What kind of paint should we use? Latex? Oil based? What brand? The wood we are using is birch plywood for the boxes with poplar for the facing.

We use oil based if we can. It lays smoother than latex. We also spray the cabinet and doors/drawers.
