Being from the upper Midwest of the USA, I was always told that peonies need COLD (not "coldish") weather in order to bloom well. By COLD, I'm thinking around ZERO degrees or lower. However, I have to admit, I have never tested that theory by trying to grow one south of Zone 6 in the USA.

Indoors? let me wish you good luck again. I can't imagine that would work very well. Peonies have deep growing roots--which is why they survive for 40 or 50 years.

Hi cosococo, wish I could be more optimistic but I'm thinking dublinbay is correct; peonies need a month or more of below freezing chill time to start growing again in the spring. Do you have a place outside that you can plant your root? If you're in a warmer zone you can plant it in a pot outside if you'd like--I haven't had much luck with pots here in zone 4/5. If you have it in a pot inside now that might be okay but you'll want to get it outside for part of the winter. They require quite a bit of sun or they'll be very weak and leggy, too. Wish you the best of luck with your peony experiment, though--they're certainly worth growing!
