What is afflicting my Pittosporum tobira variegata?

I have a Pittosporum tobira variegata that's been growing in the yard since at least the 80's. I just started paying attention to it and cut it back significantly. It had been a dense hedge. When I started cutting it back I noticed that some of the lower level branches have a half inch wide black streak of dead rotted wood on the top surface of the branches.
A few months ago I found a 3 foot metal pipe tangled among the branches. Our gardener or landscaper must've left it there. It was completely rusted, so it must've been there for years. The branches with black rotted streaks do lie in the area where the rusted pipe was.
