For some reason, every year the first couple of buds on my hardy hibiscus plants turn yellow and fall off. I have never known why, but by July the plants seem to be over it and start blooming their hearts out! I don't know if this helps, but I have never worried about it.

I have three kinds:

One red, which is blooming like crazy now (first year);

One white with okra-type leaves that just started blooming this morning;

One white one with fine cut Marijuana-type leaves that was supposed to be the Red Texas Star...maybe it is the rare white one. I picked the seeds off the plant myself. Recessive genes? Very strange.

I have not noticed that problem happening to my hardy hibiscus flowers or the tropical ones, either. Perhaps it is a humidity issue??? They like a hot, dry environment with occasional watering. The flowers get yellowish or brownish when it is humid or rainy, the water apparently spoiling the delicate blooms. Just a thought.

I have read that any kind of stress will cause them to drop some blooms. Too little or too much water, moving the plant, etc. How is the location and watering?
