I have never tried this tree, or seen them in my zone, but they are rated as cold tolerant to zone 6. They would survive a zone 6a typical winter, but anything lower than -10 F and protection will be needed. Also apparently invasive so even if it did die to the ground, it should send up new plants. Blooms late summer, and loses leaves in the fall. Can grow well above 20 feet tall in zone 7 and up, and can also eventually reach 20 feet or more in a zone 6 if temperatures dont go below -10F or so.
