HI

i have had a kumquat tree in my front yard for years, last year it started producing oranges as well.the leaves are larger and brighter.how did this happen? it must have been grafted by a bird or something.

Most likely the rootstock sprouted a sucker branch that is now producing the oranges. If the branch producing the oranges starts lower on the trunk than the other branches, it is a rootstock sucker.

i agree with John. did any of the oranges ripen? they were most likely a sour type orange. it'd be best to cut off any lower branches if you want to keep the kumquat, else the sucker branches will take over and the graft will die off.

I wasn't aware that Kumquat were grafted. Mine (called a centennial Variegated) was bought VERY small with fruit on it and I do not see a graft line.
