I've already bought 2 trees and each has died on me. I am determined to get this tree to thrive here in Houston. today I went to a tropical tree nursery. I spoke to the owner and her answer is very simple, this tree needs lots of water! and i've been too afraid of overwatering.

She has a 45 gallon caimito and it begins flowering in the winter . But that is the problem: It doesn't get hot enough during the winter (even in her large greenhouse) to get the fruit big enough to eat. So she gets tons of fruit, but tiny. This info was enough to get me optimistic. I was able to somehow get my carambola tree to change it's flowering time one year, so maybe I can do the same for the caimito.

She also sells 3 gal caimitos (4-5 ft, very healthy trees), and she says they flower during the winter too. So it's not that the tree needs to be very big. don't let them get cold, at all, not even near freezing, give them lots of water, and somehow lots of warmth and light in the winter.

does anyone else in the states have a fruiting caimito?
