Although not Ron, and although I really have no idea, I have been giving this some thought. It seems that even humans have offspring that aren't the same as others. Why should our flowers be different?
Who knows why some people have different chromosomes than others? Randomly though, some do. Not necessarily "deformed" though definately unique and special in thier own way; holding a different kind of beauty than we are accustomed to.
Perhaps it is so with our plants as well.

njoynit - If you notice most of the splitting occurs along what would ordinarilly be the secondary folds >which is where the petal tissue fuses to form a single funnelform corolla...

The very earliest forms of Morning Glories all had separate petals which eventually evolved to have the once separate petals fuse into a single funnel...

Additionally as per Ipomoea nil and some other highly bred Ipomoea purpurea...some of these plants have corrola tubes that are simply not stiff enough to support the extra large corollas...resulting in the very commonly seen 'buckling' at some point along the tube and overly 'floppy' limbs where the flower is unable to open up for 'business' and basically looks like a 'blob of tissue'...

Genes for splitting are also sometimes picked up and incompletely expressed >thus the usual type of fusing does not take place along the folds and this also causes some unexpected splitting of the corolla petal(s)...

There are a multitude of reasons in addition to commonly experienced environmental variables (e.g.temperature extremes/rapid temperature fluctuations) which contribute to the reasons as to why the corollas can result in 'deformed' looking flowers...

I also agree with the general comments offered by blue_velvet_elvis on the varying views regarding the aesthetic appreciation of plants,other lifeforms and any other natural or 'unnatural shapes and forms......
