As far as I can see, this is a Coachman door by Clopay.

Are the garage doors wood? I remember my old garage doors were a thinner sheet metal and were damaged during a strong windstorm. I would love to have something more durable than the most basic doors. http://www.js-garagedoors-va.com/services-repairs.asp

The door could actually be a wood door. It is hard to tell from the outside style alone. This style comes in wood and also in a steel with overlay by @Clopay. @hollietruesdale Garage doors that are painted black have to be done so with a special paint in order to avoid warping, and generally it is not a "true black" but as close as you can get. All things to take into consideration. Coachman doors do not come in black, and wood doors (again) would need to be painted that colour and would recommend double checking with the manufacturer instructions to protect warranty. Black doors are popular right now. Visit our page to see a few examples of black garage doors.

I am not sure the extent of the wood doors but for any steel doors this is very big concern. The quality of the steel must be of a particular level and the paint should be looked into. Wood is always vulnerable to the elements because it is natural, so it is extremely important to take care and follow all instructions to protect the product and warranty. In Vancouver, BC, where we are located there is a lot of rain, which means doors are absorbing and bloating with water because of age or lack of sufficient protection. Something to keep in mind. Wood looks beautiful but does require the most amount of maintenance.

@Clopay does not recommend painting Coachman doors black, however there is a special paint system that meets the requirements. The Coachman door is steel with insulation and a composite overlay. Here is an example of a Coachman door painted black. This project took many hours and coats to achieve this look.
