MAGTAG Tomato Fest in 2 weeks

Tomato folk,

For those living around Baltimore MD and beyond, our 3rd annual Tomatofest is going on at a pavilion in Baltimore in 2 weeks on Saturday August 16th.

Last year we had 36 people and 80 tomato varieties. We spent most of the time tasting the tomatoes and grilling and eating food. Then we judged the tomatoes for best tasting, bigest ect. My daughters made some awards for the winners :-)

We have an offical homebrew for the event. This year its a Belgian Wit beer. Things get started at about 10-11AM and folks start leaving 2:30PM to 4PM. Some folks come early and other late but if you want your tomatoes to be tasted for the competition do not come to late.

Lots of folks bring tomato dishes to try and seeds to swap.

All are welcome and there is no fee. Directions are as follows:

Hmmm, us Northern California tomato growers may have to counter that Belgian Wit with a nice homebrewed porter for our Northern California Tomato Tasting event this Sunday, if I can get my tail there. I have heard Greg, that you are quite the brewer though.

    Landarc,

    (Tomato)
Thanks for he complement. I do my best but this year I was a little rushed. I had only 7 weeks till the tomatofest to (Tomato)
make the Wit. After the brew had been in the fermenters for 2 weeks I figured I would do a calculation and use
    (Tomato)
residual suger to carbonate the batch in bottles. I think that my mash was a little cooler then expected and more of
    (Tomato)
the suger was fermentable so.... I have been worried about exploding bottles. Anyway it turns out that most it is not
    (Tomato)
over fermented yet and a lot of it is quite perfect. I have put a bunch in the fidge to stop the fermentation.

    You live and you learn.

    How did the porter go?

My first batch and I am totally hooked. The porter came out great, and it has been getting better in the bottle. I like porter for going with food, this one doesn't disappoint. Nice fine dense tan head, very fine bubbles. Color is nice and dark, abv (7%) was a tad high (I can live with this, like I can live with a beefsteak that is more than a pound). Overall flavor is quite good (IMHO) for a porter.

I am looking forward to NORCATT and getting feedback, so far, everyone has liked it and ordered more from the as yet to be considered second batch.

    Landarc,

Nice. Porter is the type of thing that would go well with
    (tomato)
a BLT. Do you have a recipe that is all grain to share?

This is the all grain version of the Stout I brewed, except I used White Labs WLP001 American Ale. Don't know why I did that. I will be drinking this with a panzanella I intend to make for NORCATT. I am hoping to get some great tomatoes from the tasting, add some smoky bacon and just feel good about it all.

    All Grain Stout
    8.00 lbs. Pale Malt(2-row)
    1.00 lbs. Crystal 40L
    1.00 lbs. Munich Malt(2-row)
    0.50 lbs. Cara-Pils Dextrine Malt
    0.50 lbs. Black Patent Malt
    0.25 lbs. Chocolate Malt

1.00 oz. Northern Brewer 60 min.
    1.00 oz. Cascade 6 min.

    White Labs WLP005 British Ale

    Landarc,

Nice recipe. I think I already have the ingredents but I may need to my more pale 2-row. I buy it by the 55LBS bag and I have a grain mill. It takes me all day, or most of it, to brew a 10 gallon batch.

I will try this one, then I will drink one with a BLT :-)

    Tomato folk,

I just purchased $100 dollars of pennies for the tomato taste judging. Thats 10,000 pennies.

Our judging scale is 0 to 3 pennies:

    0- bad or flavorless
    1 - good
    2 - very good
    3 - in my top 3

I figure that average rating per tomato will be 1.5 pennies. (no cutting pennies please). This means that:

    (10,000 pennies)/((100 varieties)*(1.5 pennies/variety) = (people tasting)

hence 66 people including one pregnent women can judge without us running out of pennies.

    Very nice.

    Greg
