How can you make tile and carpet meet without a transition strip?

I'm getting new carpet in my family room, but first want to put a small section of tile down by the door from the garage. I really don't want transition strips (especially metal) surrounding the tile. Should we build up the height of the tile to exactly match the height of the carpet? Make it a little lower? Give up and use some type of transition? Any quick help would be so appreciated as I need to get this done this week.

Set the tile so that they end a bit higher than the height of the tacks on a tackless strip. Then you install tackless strips around the tiled area with the correct spacing and attach the carpet like you would at a wall. If you are worried about the corners of your tile not being strong enough, they do make some metal transitions that only have about and 1/8" or less showing on top so they are barely noticable. You would still set the carpet as I described.

what alice said. Your tile will be fine without even using a metal edge trim piece as long as you make sure that the tile has 100% coverage with thinset all the way to the edges.
