How do you paint German siding?

Hi. I just bought a little old house in the mountains to be used as a weekend place. It was built in 1920 and it really is a "shack". It is covered in German siding, which is in pretty good shape. Someone tried to paint it and did an awful job, so I was told I could rent a sandblasting tool and take that paint off. But I heard that German siding does not hold paint. In other words, if I prime and paint it, how long will it last? What kind of primer and paint should I use? We were going to cover it with siding, but I hate to cover it up. Help!!

We just did this to our rental. It was covered in asbestos siding which we tore off. Then we rented a pressure washer. After a good cleaning you will have to get some elbow greese out =D and take a scraper and do it the old fashioned way. You will then have to sand it down and if some of the boards are rotten you will have to replace them. They do hold paint well, why wouldn't it. It's just wood siding cut into a pattern. I agree with you saying you would hate yourself it you covered it up.
