Window Film to Frame a Mirror?

I have been updating my guest bathroom. I have two large wall mirrors without frames above my two sinks. (I updated the sinks, lights, and faucets). I looked at Mirrorxxxxx frames but do not have the clearance for an actual frame behind the two faucets. My plan is to "frame" each mirror with frosted window film. My concern is the best way to do this. If I cover the entire mirror with film and cut out the center will I scratch the mirror? Am I better off cutting out the center BEFORE I put it on the mirror? I have searched and searched for advice and cannot find anything. So any help - especially from someone who has used window film would be very appreciated. TIA!
