I changed from a huge flourescent dome to 4" recessed lights and am loving them. Another choice would be some nice xenon or halogen track lighting. Halogen can give off quite a bit of heat though and we're in FL so we're staying away from that. It sounds like you want to install recessed lighting which could be a big or little job depending on your situation. If there is an attic above, the lights may be installed without disturbing your ceiling, but is an energy loser. If a second floor is above the ceiling, some sheetrock repair will probably be needed afterwards because the wires need to be run above the ceiling. An elecrtician will charge you $400-$500 to install the lights then the ceiling may need to be repaired and painted.
