Just hadn't run across this before, as we haven't had a gazebo before. What is typically used as flooring in a covered gazebo-deck boards alone?

Okay, got it. Wonder why the previous owner used plywood instead-cheaper? Our gazebo is raised, in fact it has two steps to get into it, which maybe isn't typical? Could I just tear out the plywood and use deck boards instead?

They probley went for the look the carpet gave. Depending on the decking you go for and the plywood/carpet they used it might not come out all that cheep compaired to each other. Maney Folks install the project a couple steps up.

Well, here I am and summer's going to be winding down and we haven't done the floor yet. (Complicated by the fact that we have been trying to unsuccessfully evict a groundhog from under the gazebo). What about doing some kind of faux paint treatment on the floor with deck and floor paint to make it look like stone tile? I could use the seams where the plywood comes together for some of the "grout lines."

You could put a membrane down over the plywood and tile or paver over the membrane. There are a ton of companies that make them like Wescoat to Noble Deck.

That sounds like something I would be interested in, but I need more info. Would that work in a cold climate like mine-zone 5 with the freeze-thaw in winter?

In 2005 we had a screened porch built with ceramic tile as a floor. We live in zone 5. We used a low water absorbing floor tile installed on a membrane on top of exterior plywood. We have not had any problems. Here is a link to the membrane that was used:
