We used Sweet Autumn Clematis here. My client will cut it back to the top of the post each year in winter. It's one of my favorites because the foliage stays nice all summer, then it bursts into fragrant bloom in September/October. Be sure to research whether this is an invasive plant in your area before using.

I also love clematis, but have found a lot of problems when I planted a few around a wood deck - as earwigs love this plant...
