Alternative for my stairs

In my previous post, I shared that I was remodeling the bonus room above my garage. I really liked the laminate wood floor for that room but ran into the problem of the expense for the bullnose over stair treads.

What other options have you seen on stairs that look nice leading up to a laminate floor? Painted stairs maybe?

Or if I'm worried about the cost, is there something else similar to laminate that will work in both places?

What is at the base of the stairs?
The least costly thing would be to paint (if the treads are good); then probably to carpet. Is there carpet in the room at the bottom of the stairs?

If the existing treads are wood you could stain them to match the laminate flooring and then install a carpet runner so only part of the treads show on either side of the carpet.

If the laminate increases the height of the top riser more than is allowable that is a more serious problem.
