butcher block counter install in kitchen (possible? who does it?)

Hi Garden Web-

I have been reading this forum for ages and this is my first post!

We are doing a major kitchen/home renovation and I hope to use a cherry butcher block countertop.

I have read about John Boos being a great product but all their local dealers don't want to deal with residential clients (they do commercial kitchens exclusively). They will supply, but they won't measure or install or guarantee a fit.

I am not sure I can find a contracter who will take this on if it is not their product. If you had butcherblock installed professionally, who did it?

We are pretty set on cherry (to match the cabinets) so Ikea is not an option.

There are two corners that will have to be joined and we don't want to do the install ourselves.

How to move forward?

Any tips?

Your GC or finish carpenter can do this.

I asked our cabinet/trim carpenter about installing our Ikea butcher block tops. I don't think he's done it before, but he quoted what I thought was a reasonable price. Everything he's done so far has been great, so I'm not too worried. They haven't gone in yet.

I agree that a finish carpenter, with a couple of helpers, is the right person to look for. Sometimes you can get good recommendations at places that sell custom doors and windows.

FYI, we have the hard rock Boos maple with the oiled finish. Just love it.

We have had it almost10 years now.

Thanks for all the replies! I am still figuring out how gw works...

I will look for a finish carpenter for this part of the job - I am not sure if they will want to measure or just install... we will see.

Just got a quote from John Boos - seriously expensive (I knew that going in but I didn't expect it to be more than granite or marble!)

I think we may just do a small piece in butcher block...

Now I am worried about color matching cherry cabinet with cherry butcherblock. Will this work?

Do you have a GC? It's the GC's job to find somebody.

Where are your cabinets from? I think Country Craftsmen in Uxbridge will do a wooden countertop for you if they do your cabs and installation.

Yes, the reason is the last two letters of his/her user name: "MA." Our contractors are pickier and have a greater sense of entitlement than cats.

Oh, the not sure part was more in reference to measuring! (but marcolo you made me laugh)

We are making our own cabinets... and I wasn't sure we'd find a contractor to measure and install, maybe even supply... you know template like a granite place might do it... but I am not sure this is done with butcher block.

I am gathering from the replies here that its more typical for the home owner to measure and buy and have a carpenter install.
