Can the dividers for the dishes be added to an existing drawer?

Yes they can. A cabinet maker can cut and install a peg system for you that has adjustable cam type screws making a good fit for each set of plates.

Several years ago I bought a system from Williams Sonoma that you placed a wood slat with holes in the bottom of your drawer, and then placed the pegs where you needed them.
