garden privacy screen

There is an ~4 foot wall at edge of my property which abuts the neighbor. The wall is very nice, but there is no privacy for our yard (pictures below are a view from our patio and a view along the wall). We would like to put in some landscaping along the wall from the edge of our house to the large tree to act as a privacy screen (it's about 30 feet). I hate to hde the wall but at present our yard is visable to the two adjacent neighbors. had planned to use an evergreen (arborvites or simular) with hostas or maybe hydrangeas in front but i am open to any suggestions on what to use. We love in USDA zone 6a.

Too bad the neighbours wouldn't put up a fence, saving you from having to block that beautiful stone wall! I would plant an emerald cedar (or similar) every six feet or so along the retaining wall. Since emerald cedars are more columnar in habit and only spread to about 3' wide, you would still see the wall intermittently along the row. Yet, they would create enough of a visual barrier that you will have your privacy.

If you want even more privacy than that, could you set large flower pots along the stone wall between the emerald cedars, to provide even more blockage?

You can always leg up the evergreens to expose the wall once they grow a bit. Plant them close to the wall to preserve space in your yard.
