I tried the floor planner but have a hard time visualizing how the designs would work Just because I can fit the frig there doesn't mean I'm not going to get annoyed walking around it or its not going to make the room feel closed in. I'm lacking imagination I guess.

We're going to do nearly all the work. I won't move doors/walls so budget-wise we can do any design.

A good contractor with drafting skills can lay everything out for you with a simple conceptual drawing on a 8x11 piece of paper. only costs around $500-$600 and will save you a lot of time and headaches. It's great that you can do the work yourself, but someone that does this everyday for a living can take your ideas and make it all work a lot easier than someone approaching this for the first time. phone calls are free and estimates usually are as well. Its an ikea idea with a peninsula - got a family veto but I still kinda like it. I drew in the wall bumps outs and there is a 2 ft stone hearth on the floor across the whole length of the exposed brick that narrows the passageway.

It looks as if you have plenty of room for an island. I'd prefer that to the peninsula.

Good sketch. Can you label the doorways, add the stone hearth and the wood stove? Are the pantries walk-in or just shelves? Have you considered removing the wood stove and what looks like a cracked chimney?

Take complete measurements with locations for plumbing, windows etc.... Go to Lowe's and have a designer lay out your kitchen on the computer. It is a free service and could save you money in the long run. You can purchase cabinets from them, semi custom or off the shelf. You can still do your own installation but experts can explain the process.
