I have to agree with Sandy. Adding tapered columns will not create a Craftsman house.

Usually when gables have siding it is done because it was less expensive than having brick all the way up. You could add Hardiboard but I do not see the point.

Improvements that I do suggest are removing the porch railing. The porch looks to be at ground level and with no risk of falling off. Also remove the shrubs in front of the porch. They are giving the house a closed in look.

I do not like the arches either. If it is a thin board you can pry it off. If it is carved into the beam it would be easiest to nail a straight board to the face of it.

Here is an authentic Craftsman

I know it is not an authentic Craftsman house, but I have seen many houses with Craftsman touches, and I think that is okay. Yes, it has to be done right, but I have seen designers doing this on HGTV. I think it's important to balance it out with some other touches so that the columns aren't the only new feature. Even my old 1923 house is a mix of styles. It appears to be Craftsman/Tudor. I found this in a quick search. It doesn't have the tapered columns, but I was looking for the cedar beams. I haven't been able to find one with a porch like yours. Amber, I just saw your question about the gables. I really like bricked gables and would not cover them with hardie siding, although that would probably make the beams pop more. You could also do a wash on the brick. But if you consider painting brick, read about pros and cons and consider the climate in your area. http://www.mariakillam.com/limewashedexterior/

Thank you all for your input. I am still on the fence about the extent of the exterior makeover, but I am very grateful for the ideas and advice. I do get tired of seeing everyone doing the "same" farmhouse thing, probably because I am a bit of a rebel at heart, however; our style does lean toward modern country, rustic industrial vibe. I was thinking leaning toward some craftsman details may help give the whole house a cohesive direction inside and out. We shall see!

How about going for German smear on the brick for a big change. Here is a before and after Joanna Gaines did on HGTV's "Fixer Upper." Cedar trim and shutters - this could give you a new look more suitable to your home but with a few Craftsman leanings.
