Do they have a rough skin like a russet apple? Conference do. But they are also quite long and yours look a little bit too plump.

Yes the skin is rather rough, not very smooth. I'm a bit stumped as to what these are. I will try a local nursery to ask...

If you do not see any graft mark on the lower part of the trunk, it's possible the pear tree could have been grown from seed, especially if the pear fruit does not taste particular good, even when fully ripe and allowed to ripen 2 weeks off the tree.

I've seen pears that shape but they usually are not the mainstream commercial pear varieties. It's possible it could be Bosc, but the skin does not look russetted enough.

By the way, the best tasting pear variety (of the common ones) in my opinion is 'Comice'. The flesh may be firm and a little dense, but the flavor, particularly the aroma, is superb. Other people may prefer softer, juicier, more sweet pear varieties, but connoisseurs prefer Comice.

parker, While it's possible - but unlikely - that this is a seedling pear, I don't know that I could point to the graft union on most of the 30 or so grafted, fruiting-age pears I have growing here - and I grafted almost every one of them myself. Graft unions are not forever visible on all fruiting plants; bark differences in some species will be a dead giveaway, but with some species, there's no discernible difference after a few years of growth.

With the russeting and neck they do look a lot like pictures of Conference. There are some other pears with elongated necks, such as Abate Fetel.

Conference is the commonest variety grown in the UK and although these are similar I still think they are too plump in the base and show a bumpiness I've not seen in that variety.
