Mama jade gets a makeover

This is my original jade plant, given to me over ten years ago. She has provided generations upon generations of progeny. I haven't repotted in at least 5 years! She was utterly root bound in poor soil. A year or two ago I gave her the Big Chop, practically back to bare stem.

June 12: (Dave, wondering if it's munchable)

Lots of babies in the pot from dropped leaves

And today after top dressing. Not sure how I feel about the glass yet. If it doesn't keep the vermiculite down it'll get messy very fast - and I can see the vermiculite through the glass in some places. I think it looks pretty nice, though. :)

Sorry - just couldn't get a good pic today (Domino inspecting my handiwork there). Think I may work on the shaping a bit more. It's a bit gangly. Can't decide if I want it to branch out more, or keep the trunks bare.

The crushed glass is so nice !Your jade isn't to bad either :) I love your kitty. My cat is always around when I'm getting my hands dirty. If I get some more glass I will let ya know :)

May I ask why you are using vermiculite?

Sorry sorry I will edit. I meant perlite! Eeeesh. I was mixing African Violet soil before bed and had vermiculite on my mind.

Hmmm. I can't find an edit option on my original post. It was definitely perlite in the jade ;)

It does look quite nice! I kinda like how it is on the scraggly side, because you can see more of the glass.

Thanks for the correction, Rina. :) I wish I'd caught it last night.

I do kind of like the stems bare, I hope the tops get full and it looks more tree-like. I'm growing a bunch of the cuttings, going to play with them and see what interesting ways I can get them to grow.

I've always just let 'em go, and they ended up as long leggy trailing things. It took me a long time to gather up the courage to chop but now I'm ruthless ha!

I've been really inspired by the amazing jades I've seen here, and learned so much about proper care. I'm glad I have lots of cuttings to play with.
