Opinions on Crown Molding

I'm looking for opinions on crown molding.

1) Has anyone worked with or seen polyurethane molding (e.g. http://www.ekenamillwork.com/about-our-products/urethane-millwork/moulding/crown-moulding/4-to-6-face/3-3-4-h-x-4-1-8-p-x-5-5-8-f-x-94-1-2-l-dylan-traditional-smooth-crown-moulding.html)?

I'm considering it as it seems to have more modern options (more straight lines, less curves) but none of the contractors seem familiar with it so I'd welcome any feedback on whether it is a good product or if I should stick to MDF or wood.

2) In the kitchen, we installed new cabinets and they have molding at the top. Should we add that same molding to the entire kitchen (e.g., add it above the windows and to the breakfast nook).

3) Finally, I'd welcome any general thoughts on crown molding. We are trying to have a modern home, but are probably landing somewhere in the transitional style. Our ceilings are not high (8.5') but most of the downstairs is basically white (swiss coffee) to make the space feel bigger. So we were thinking of adding crown to make the area feel more finished and create some separation between the walls and ceiling.

That is a very nice molding, my friend has it throughout the first floor in his house, different profile but same material and it looks beautiful.

As your kitchen goes usually crown molding on cabinets matches cabinet finish. If you have painted cabinets you can order the same molding for the ceiling... but people usually don't do that because crown molding with cabinet finish can be expensive, so most people will use crown with matching or not profile for the ceiling and have it painted the same color as the trim in the house.

Choosing a crown that is similar to the cabinet profile is pretty common. I haven't worked with polyurethane but think that it might have better expansion characteristics than wood.

You could just install a temporary length of a crown profile to see whether you like it. My wife and I installed lengths of a few profiles in our kitchen and lived with them for a week before choosing the one we installed.

A home that does not have crown molding is often unsuited to crown molding. You never see crown in a modern style home. I would not water the money and energy installing crown if you want a modern home. It's inappropriate.

Totally disagree with this "you can't put crown moulding in a modern home" - I've lived in Italy, France and Switzerland for many years. There, people put modern furnishings in 400 year old homes, and crown moulding in modern homes. This attitude that the style of your home dictates ALL style and design decisions in your home is plebian at best. Crown moulding will give a modern plain box "character." If you live in that home you will see it everyday, go bold, and don't cut costs (although there are some great cost efficient moulding options out there.) In a modern home, a simple cove (check with the charts available that show what width crown moulding you should use for the height of your ceiling) is elegant and much better than the bare seam of the ceiling and the wall.
