It looks like a maple, Acer species.

Moose-wood. It's nice that it's all over there as otherwise ungulates generally give it a bad time. However if this is a sign that the Park isn't maintaining normal ungulate population levels...

I believe your treeling is Acer spicatum ( Mountain Maple ). The only other species in that neck of the woods, that comes close to it is A. pensylvanica. I'm not familiar with the term moose-wood. I looked it up and only things coming up were restaurants. I'm assuming the o.p. meant mature trees growing all over the park. If there were millions of saplings everywhere then I'd say they need more deer and moose and browsers and should ban hunting which is stupid and barbaric anyways. Visited that park years ago. Very beautiful and enchanting, and walking around the reef at low tide was awesome!

Relative lack of a dentate margin suggests Acer pensylvanicum (Moosewood) over Acer spicatum.

A. pensylvanicum is quite usual all over the colder areas of New England, and moosewood and striped bark maple are a couple of its common names. A. spicatum seems to be more restricted in growing requirements or it likes it colder since it is far less common IME.

Embothrium, I notice that moosewood maple is less heavily targeted by deer, compared to other understory foliage like oak/hickory, etc seedlings. Don't know why.

Way down yonder here in the south ( Illinois ) some of these common names aren't very common. Neither are the trees they belong to. And we don't have moose.
